Mandatory Winter Tires Return Oct. 1: Here’s Where They’re Needed
October 09 2025,

Beginning Oct. 1, B.C.’s winter tire regulations return. These rules remain in effect until April 30 on most highways, while some routes without significant snowfall or mountain passes end earlier on March 31. It is an annual reminder to prepare vehicles for safer travel.
Highways Included in the Regulations

The rules cover highways in the North and Interior, as well as stretches of the South Coast such as the Sea to Sky. On Vancouver Island, drivers must comply when travelling along the Malahat, Highway 4, Highway 14, and Highway 28. Although the Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island are not included, sudden weather shifts make it smart to stay ready.
Meeting Tire Standards

Qualifying tires must display either the M+S (mud and snow) marking or the mountain and snowflake symbol. Tread depth must measure at least 3.5 millimetres. Failing to meet these requirements could lead to a $121 fine, making the right tires both a safety and financial choice.
Chain Rules for Larger Vehicles
Commercial vehicles are also included in these seasonal regulations. Most must carry chains on designated highways, with signs providing direction on when to install them. While this does not apply to the Lower Mainland or most of Vancouver Island, it is critical elsewhere for keeping roads safe during storms.
